You know how when you need to get a child to eat something that's god for him, you have to take the trouble to dress it up somehow so that it appears more exciting than it really is? If your child won't eat a bite until you run around the room pretending that the spoonful of food is an airplane coming to land in the airport in his mouth, this piece of news about what the government just pulled for the good of the citizenry won't surprise you one little bit. The government has found that Americans just don't find it interesting enough when they are told about the hurricane preparedness checklist they need to commit to heart. Apparently, people would rather be dead than listen to good advice. So the government, or the CDC to be specific, has hit upon a rather creative way to get people to listen.

They've noticed that people these days seem attuned to movies and games to do with vampires and zombies. Zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead get people excited about defending themselves and being heroes. Picking up a cue from this kind of scenario, the CDC put out a detailed post recently, ahead of all the hurricanes, that sounded completely serious.

The blog post, entitled First there were Zombies; then came Hurricanes!, is a laugh riot. And since it's on a government website, you don't really know if you should laugh. Every single thing they ask you to do on that zombie attack preparedness list actually belong on a hurricane preparedness list too. If the government wants you to prepare yourself with a first aid kit for a hurricane, they say that you should keep a first aid kit for zombie bites. If a zombie doesn't actually bite you, they say that you could use the first aid kit for any injuries suffered during a tornado.

Remember how in the movie Naked Gun 2 1/2, a scholar reading a scholarly paper out to attending dignitaries knocks them out cold with boredom? They fall asleep in the oddest positions in the middle of the presentation. But then, Leslie Nielsen switches his papers for some erotica and everyone wakes up right away. That's the way it's been with this particular hurricane preparedness checklist posting. They just substituted 'zombies' for 'hurricanes' and the page became so popular the site crashed.

Apparently, the official who was responsible for this post really did this without official approval. But he people have been taking his message seriously, so delighted are they with this little stroke of creativity. People are actually going out and buying materials to prepare themselves. And that's what it is all about.
